The MASTER OF FINE ARTS (MFA) in Creative Technologies at Virginia Tech is a professional degree program that prepares students to use digital and interactive technologies to create, present, communicate, and shape information and imagery. The program is cross-disciplinary and inter- media, enabling talented and engaged students to design a challenging plan of study uniquely tailored to their interests and goals. The program promotes innovation at the intersection of art, design, and technology.

Description: 

The Interdisciplinary Graduate Education Program (IGEP) in Human Centered Design (HCD) offers students at Virginia Tech a graduate certificate or an individualized PhD.

HCD is a field of design research that insists that the needs, wants, and limitations of end-users are integrated at every stage of the design process. HCD involves artists, designers, educators, engineers, computer scientists, learning scientists, humanists, and technology specialists working together to meet the needs of clients as varied as multinational corporations and rural villagers.

Description: 

This is a two-semester core DISIS course focusing on the Max/MSP/Jitter interactive multimedia software development environment, interfacing with external input devices (e.g. sensors and motes) and other multimedia development platforms (e.g. Blender and/or Unity3D). The course covers real-time interactive multimedia art composition and performance, including algorithmic manipulation of sound, video, and 3D content, as well as the design of hyperinstruments, installations, and virtual interfaces and is open to all majors.

What is innovation? Where does it come from? What are its values? How are innovative careers made? Using collaborative student-directed inquiry, this graduate seminar investigates how innovation has become the organizing frame for work across the arts, design, engineering, and sciences. With students from programs across campus we explore the boundaries, methods, hype, and deeper meanings of "innovation. The class is an opportunity for students to be creative and proactive about their learning in ways that traditional courses often unintentionally discourage.
