ICAT Overview

ICAT's Vision, Mission and Process:

Vision

ICAT will foster the creative process, from imagination to innovation, to create new possibilities for exploration and expression.

Mission

ICAT will forge a pathway between transdisciplinary research and artistic output, scientific and commercial discovery, and educational innovation.

Process

The ongoing work of building and sustaining the institute itself will be an exemplar of the creative process of inclusion, co-creation, innovation, critical reflection, refinement, and iteration.

ICAT has three primary goals:

Learning

To prepare primary, secondary, and university students to work and succeed in a world where science, technology, engineering and math education collaborate and where working as part of a diverse team is mandatory.

Discovery

To promote new, transdisciplinary research domains that transcend boundaries between art, design, engineering, and science to fuel future innovation within local, state, and national industrial partners.

Engagement

To encourage people of all ages to participate in the creative process, where new ideas can come from anywhere, most often from those with a lifetime of personal experience.

Effects of ICAT:

  • Transforming K-12 and university-level education in the local community, across the Commonwealth, and across the U.S. to prepare them to be part of a new type of transdisciplinary workforce necessary to succeed in this era of rapid innovation
  • Driving economic development in the Commonwealth by creating an environment for spinning off and partnering with companies that can adapt and succeed in response to the transdisciplinary driving forces of today's economy
  • Engaging the general public at the intersections of science, engineering, art, and design

More than just a "Media Lab", ICAT is a "Transdisciplinary Living Lab" tightly integrated with educational, commercial, and arts communities.

Studio Model of Innovation

We are a collection of collaborative studios composed of faculty, students, industrial partners, and community volunteers working together toward creating a one-of-a-kind collaborative environment for enacting change. ICAT includes five studios: IDEA, IMAGE, IMPACT, IMPLEMENT, and INTERACT.
